2004 Awards of Excellence
Early in 2004, Unit 157's Board of Directors wanted a way to honor the "unsung heroes" of our local Clubs.  lt was decided to make an annual presentation, which was named the Award Of Excellence.  Local Clubs were asked to nominate individuals, who have made a difference, often working behind the scenes, in their Clubs.

From the nominations received, a committee selected five persons to receive the first ever Unit 157 Awards of Excellence.  At our Cheaha Tournament in October 2004, the presentations were made to the following recipients:

Nominated by Montgomery Bridge Club, for her many services to the Club, including holding office many times, especially the thankless task of Partnership Chair for over ten years, Martha Brandt.

Nominated by Montgomery Bridge Club, a person who has served in many capacities, but especially as Director and Head Director.  She is a role model for Club Directors in her calm and effective demeanor, and her willingness to help "newbies" become competent directors. Carolyn Dunn.

Nominated by the Bridge Club of Anniston, the man who refused to give up on his Club, and began Easybridge!  classes, which enabled the Club to grow, and to become one of ACBL's Star Clubs. Jack Hadder.

Nominated by Birmingham Duplicate Bridge Club, a woman who excels at anything she undertakes, who organized the tournament protocols and procedures for the club, and chaired a great Regional Tournament, Charlotte Rueschenberg.

Nominated by Birmingham Duplicate Bridge Club, the originator, and first editor of the Birmingham BridgEnews, an email newsletter that gets  bridge information out to hundreds of players every week,  Richard Telkamp.

Each winner received a personally engraved Lucite award plaque, and a round of applause.  lt was a great way to show appreciation to those club members who make things run smoothly in the local clubs, for love of the game.
